Biography

Carmen Mauk is Co-founder and Executive Director of Burners Without Borders, a non-profit organisation that develops innovative models for sustainable disaster relief programs in the US and abroad. She is also Co-founder of the Peruvian disaster reconstruction organization, Pisco Sin Fronteras, and sits on the Board of Directors.

Carmen is currently collaborating with the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and STAR-TIDES to research and promote community led initiatives that foster resiliency post-disaster. Carmen holds a Master's degree in Transformative Leadership from the California Institute of Integral Studies.

At regular but unpredictable intervals, people around the world are affected by natural hazards. We can only expect that these events will increase in number and ferocity the future. Disaster management is a complex series of activities and external assistance can provide expert knowledge and resources, but survivors and people living in the area can also do much to help if they are prepared and supported.
